North Vs. South. Blue Vs. Gray. Brother Vs. Brother. The American Civil War is one of the most popular wargaming periods to recreate, and a fever for historical battles has swept through my local game club.

I’m mostly caught up in painting my 28mm Napoleonic minis at the moment, but the chance to get involved in another new period while it’s peaked peoples interest is too good an opportunity to miss. I also like the fact that I can do a lot with a little, in terms of models for ACW – there are only two sides, and they’re all basically made up of a handful of unit types. Of course as I get more involved, there’s bound to be all kinds of additional units or regiments to collect and paint, but on the surface, this is a gaming period with an easy buy-in level.

It’s still early days, but we had a tried out a demo game over the weekend using the Guns at Gettysburg rule set. This was a mostly proxy-modeled game, with a trio of commanders on each side of the table. but it was a lot of fun. I left with the feeling that two fully painted armies of this kind facing off against each other will be a fine sight to see!

Model-wise I’m torn between Blue Moon and Old Glory. I’ll do some ordering as soon as I get a chance to sit down and peruse what everyone’s selling. There’s no doubt for terrain I’ll be going with JR Miniatures for buildings – solid work as always.
