IS-2’s and Russian To-Do List

I’ve been a little quiet lately, but that’s mainly down to all the gaming and painting I’ve been doing lately, which let’s be honest, is the only good reason to be neglecting a blog of this kind!

There’s be a lot going on at the game club, with infantry ace campaigns, regular games etc. but something that’s really captured my interest is a game tournament happening in January. It’s a 1750 point Late War affair, with roughly ten-twelve people entering. I’ll be honest, I’ve casually dabbled with informal game tournaments, usually with little interest, as I’m not that competitive, but this time things are a little different.

I have to win. I mean I have to win! I don’t know why, but there’s a little voice in my head saying this is the one time you’re not going to fool around with wacky army lists, or try and see what happens if you rush your conscript infantry at that pile of HMG’s. No, I’m going to approach this logically, with a balanced force, heck I may even practice!

So, what list should I take? My gut reaction was German Fallschirmjager, mainly because I just finished a rather stunning paint job on them (see, I told you I’ve been busy!) but I’ve attached my own stigma to any kind of fearless veteran infantry, believing them to be a professional finesse army, and beyond my feeble tactical mind to use effectively.

Next on the list of options is a Russian Strelkovny Battalion. Make no mistake, 1750pts buys a whole lotta Russians. More than double the amount of stands/guns/armored units as the Fallschirmjager force I contemplated. Here’s the proposed list:

HQ with attached AT Rifles

2 x 2-Company Strelkovny Rifle/MG Platoons

HMG Company – 2 Units

Mortar Company – 2 Units + Observer

Field Gun Battery – 2 Units + Observer

Shtraf Company – 1 Unit

3 IS-2’s

3 SU-76m’s

3 SU-85’s

The theory is, I’ll have enough infantry to go toe-to-toe with other infantry lists, and enough AT guns to stand up to any kind of armored force. I have everything painted except the Shtraf Company, but almost half the infantry bases need basing which is going to take some time. In the meantime, here’s a peek at my newly-painted IS-2’s.
